Walter Smith, affectionately known as the Gaffer, was responsible for bringing joy to so many Rangers fans, so it was no surprise the news of his passing left us all shocked & saddened. Having took over from Graeme Souness in 1991, Smith won seven of the 9 in a row titles, including a treble in 1992/93 season, before leaving for Everton in 1998. After an SOS call from Chairman David Murray in 2007 Smith returned 'home' for a second spell as manager, reaching the UEFA Cup final in 2008 & winning another three SPL championships before retiring in 2011. In total Walter Smith won 21 major trophies including 10 league titles, 5 Scottish Cups & 6 League Cups, making him the second most successful manager in Rangers history.There are people for whom Rangers Football Club is their entire way of life.
